Butomus umbellatus, commonly known as Flowering Rush, is one of the most beautiful native marginal pond plants, producing delicate, rose-pink flowers in rounded umbels on tall stems throughout summer. A true marginal plant, it must be grown in shallow water or very wet soil at the pond's edge, at a depth of 5 to 15cm. The slender, twisted leaves add elegant movement to the water garden even when the plant is not in flower. Flowering Rush is also a valuable wildlife plant, attracting pollinators and providing habitat at the water's margin. Plant in a basket with aquatic compost for best results.
